Re: Public Comment to the June 1, 2026, City Council Meeting
Agenda Item XI.A. re: U.S. ICE Activities in Montclair
Honorable Mayor Dutrey and Council Members,
The League of Women Voters of the Mount Baldy Area, which includes the City of Montclair, is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. We neither support nor oppose candidates or political parties at any level of government but always work on vital issues of concern to members and the public. We empower voters and defend democracy through advocacy, education, and litigation, at the local, state, and national levels.
We commend the City of Montclair for directing the City Manager to prepare a response to points raised by community members at its April 6, 2026, meeting regarding actions in the city of Montclair of ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). We also thank City staff for providing its detailed analysis on these concerns as background materials for the Council’s deliberations this evening.
The League of Women Voters condemns the escalating actions by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that put people at risk, deny individuals their constitutional rights, and undermine the democratic values meant to protect us all. We are also strong supporters of the California Values Act (SB 54) which prevents
state and local law enforcement from acting as federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to detain and deport immigrants.
The League of Women Voters of the United States reaffirms that the rights outlined in the Constitution belong to all people, without exception. We will not accept policies or practices that suppress civic participation, weaponize enforcement, or undermine fundamental rights and human dignity of any member of our communities. We have called for ICE to be held accountable for the lack of transparency, accountability, and constitutional compliance.
The Council’s meetings open with the Pledge of Allegiance. In closing, we call on you to keep front of mind the principals of “liberty and justice for all” as you deliberate your response to the community’s asks regarding federal ICE and CBE actions within its borders, and to affirm their support for the constitutional rights of all in Montclair. Thank you.
Respectfully,
Amanda Hollis-Brusky
